Eugenio and Let Them Hear Foundation

Praying for an incredible young man and his mom and a miracle....

I have just returned from an evaluation with an audiologist that is a contact of Let them Hear Foundation with a young man named Eugenio Let them Hear will be visiting Peru to do follow up on some kids who received cochlear implants in 2004.
Eugenio has been coming to House of Mercy and will be at our Young Life camp in January
. He came to us because he despratly needs to learn sign language... deaf from birth and able to read lips, he is now losing his sight.…

I am beside myself with the weight this mother carries. She and her husband were poor to start with. Husband, a teacher (not a good paying job here at all) so he got an afternoon (construction) job on top of that 8 years ago to be able to purchase hearing aids for little Eugenio. Their second son was 2 months old. 3 months into his construction job working on a 16 story apartment building, due to poor equipment or lack of safety measures, dad falls from the 11th story to his death. Mom, Vilma had no idea what to do, she was promised all kinds of help from the construction company since dad died trying to earn enough money to buy him hearing aids. The company promised at least that. NOTHING. 8 years. Mom rode a bus 2.5 hours each way daily so Eugenio could study in a school for deaf children, learn to read lips, get speech therapy, she lugged her baby on her back, washed clothes by hand, sewed everything she could between caring for the kids and thanked God for their tiny home that they owned before losing her husband. How she has made it these 8 years and found food to feed her children is beyond me. She is a believer and knows her God has heard her cries! Eugenio was one of the first students in the country to enter the new inclusion program 4 years ago and he now studies near their home with his brother. A year ago when his vision began to go he was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome and they found out its likely that younger brother will lose his vision and sight as well. They also found out he will have to find somewhere else to study, must learn sign language, and will likely be cut off from the world if he doesn't have a cochlear implant!

Mom found out about cochlear implants 6 years ago. She has been at every meeting, every appointment, has gotten herself and her child to every place possible in Lima… she was promised here, then there, then for the last 4 years ago they've been bouncing her back and forth, each hospital saying "they have the equipment and specialist, not us." Now, with his vision loss, no one wants to deal with him.

Mom is broken, almost without hope. But not Eugenio. He is bright, aware, passionate, full of hope for the future. He told me he wants to be an actor. He plans to travel the world. He is writing the script for his own show. He loves to write, to read, to watch TV. He began, through our ministry learning sign language just 3 months ago but still must write most things out to communicate with people. With the tunnel visions (about 18% vision is left) he is able to read… and when I used my iPad today to write back and forth today it was amazing… wish i could give him one of those!!

So, here we are. Praying and hoping for a MIRACLE for a mother and a child whose lives seem to never stop with pain and suffering, a child with bright hope for a FUTURE.  As I write, doctors and friends from the foundation in the USA are working around the clock to try to get their hands on all of the right equipment and to bring it down here tomorrow! Its challenging to find a donation of equipment that costs $19,000, but we're praying for a miracle know that their interest has already moved mountains of hope!! Will you pray with us??
